Fred Kloecker is a man who has lived a safe, comfortable life of relative privilege. His parents belong to a country club, and the staff at the pricy steakhouse downtown knows him by name. But when he meets his parents’ peculiar neighbor Jon, an extravert with a passion for hunting and larger-than-life personality, Fred begins to discover a new stripped-down version of existence devoid of luxury and excess—an approach completely foreign to him.

Jon and his buddies, a motley cast of country characters, are determined to teach Fred duck hunting “the way it ought to be.” And though the lessons he learns are frequently embarrassing and almost always painful, Fred comes to realize a simpler life is, indeed, a good life.

Naturally, the normal pitfalls and challenges befall the greenhorn, and often at great expense to his pride. Lessons such as sit still, don’t look up and point, and be careful making bets that include the phrase, “If you’re right, I’ll buy dinner,” are often acquired with a painful dose of humility. However, a spectacular adventure also begins, helping Fred step far beyond his comfort zone.
